[And for the first time since they've met, Amelia smiles a little at Winter's encouragement. Truthfully, there are several major reasons why this could all be for naught but those are something she'll deal with by herself.]
We'll see how it all goes.
Today's your day, though so let's make sure that by the end of this, you'll look sharper than before.
[With a soft ding, the elevator stops and the doors slide open for them both.]
Well, if there's anything I've learned as a witch, it's that the impossible can be made possible.
[Welcome to Sephloora.
The layout would be foreign to Winter, but for Amelia the floor is like a giant makeup store with numerous stations for cosmetics and everything is lit up with pale white or yellow lights. It's a flurry of activity from guests who are shopping around for makeup, getting makeovers, and employees running up and down the aisles to make sure everything is running smoothly. Outside of the cosmetics are several stores with high-end looking fashion, not only for humanoids but for the non-humans too. Way further down are tattoo shops and hair salons.
Amelia takes a deep breath. It's way too busy for her taste, but this is for Winter and just for today.]
Well, no time like the present. The nail salon isn't too far and I've already booked ourselves appointments. If you'd like to take a detour though, let me know.
No don't actually— ANYWAY, as with most things in the hotel that skew more modern, Winter finds himself a little overwhelmed at first. There's so much stuff, and the lights are so bright, the crowd bustling. Even the busiest market in Waterdeep doesn't quite compare to the activity here.
But once he stops looking around like a deer caught in the headlights, he starts zeroing in on more and more. The makeup, especially, calls to him. Oh, the fun he could have with some of these things. ]
I think if I take a detour now, we may well be late for our appointment. On the way out, however, I would not be opposed.
That's a good idea. Let's keep to the schedule then.
[As they walk on by, several shoppers and employees are giving Winter approving looks and nods. By the standards of this floor, he's dressed to kill. Meanwhile, Amelia... Well, they're sure she'll get some more haute couture fashion sooner than later!
She leads them into a small nail technician's workshop where one heavily tattooed alien woman with pale lavender skin, sits at the table. There are shelves behind her filled with hundreds upon hundreds of bottles of nail lacquer. Some are sheer, others opaque. Many shimmer and shine and even if several colors look the same, upon closer inspection, each comes in a different finish.
The nail tech looks up and her (multiple) eyes light up when she sees Amelia and her friend.]
"Why, hello Miss Steinbeck and new guest? You've brought me not only your hands but a pair of new ones to touch?"
[Amelia hikes up a brow but pulls a chair out for Winter and then herself before sitting down.]
Yes, we're here for our appointment. He's new to all of this though, so you're going to have to walk him through it.
"Mmmm. Yes, yes. May I see your hands young man? Then I'll give you some ideas for colors."
[ Oh, all of these nods and approving looks. He's truly found his people, hasn't he? Even without the manicure, it feels like Amelia has given him a gift just by introducing him to this place.
He's going to have to remember this floor. His trips back will no doubt be frequent.
They step into the nail salon, and again Winter experiences that brief moment of being overwhelmed. The sheer number of bottles and colors and effects on display is staggering. How is one man to choose?
He snaps out of the initial shock by the time the nail tech addresses him, and he gives her a small nod of greeting, sliding into his seat. ]
Please, call me Winter. It's a pleasure to meet you.
[ He offers over his hands, as bid. There's no shortage of jewelry on his digits, all of it well taken care of, and his nails are much the same, if currently plain. ]
I'm fond of dark colors, personally. My wardrobe is mostly black.
[The nail tech delicately takes hold of Winter's hands studying them to see what kind of prep work she'll need to do. Meanwhile... Several long arms sprout from her back and reach into the shelves of nail polish.]
"Your name brings up cold and chill, your dark clothes contrast with the pale of your name and skin... Yes, yes, I have a few colors that may interest you."
[Despite the dilemma of choice that the shelves present, Winter's palette is easy to narrow down, and in a few minutes the six hands from the nail tech's back present six bottles to the warlock.]
"The dark need not be so dark. You're a multifaceted man. Let's start with something warm, a gamble of sorts. Or perhaps you like to bewitch others when they realize there's more than meets the eye?"
[What's helpful is that the hands presenting the bottles also have their nails painted in those colors so he has a better idea of what the finishes look like. She continues and holds out the other bottles that are also modeled on those nails. Her voice grows in enthusiasm as she shows off each one.]
"You also strike me as rather devilish. Ah, but if it's black that you want, ravens fit the bill.
Now my last two choices I present... Do you seek danger? Perhaps your nails can be a warning sign. And lastly, an unexpected blue, but a beautiful facet of your name."
[Amelia is looking at the six bottles with interest and she glances at Winter to see what he's thinking.]
Honestly? I think they'd all look good on you. She's saved us a lot of trouble by narrowing it down this much.
[ Oooh. Even six options feel like too many, but she's done a good job of narrowing things down. He slides one of his hands from her own to take the bottles himself, one at a time, turning them over in the light to see how the colors shine and catch.
The blue is so tempting, the color being very close to his heart, but ultimately it's a bit bright for him. So, at last, he settles on the one she'd called "ravens", and offers it back to her. ]
This one. I quite like the subtle color. Like a secret.
[ Oh, the way Winter is grinning surely means nothing good is on the horizon. Sorry, Amelia, but in his new mission to make sure the witch learns to lighten up and have fun, he leans in to whisper conspiratorially to the nail tech — though he certainly doesn't try to keep her from overhearing. ]
You've a good eye. Her new boyfriend is very fond of wearing purple.
[Amelia is just setting her hands on the table though and sighing witheringly. The nail tech giggles.]
"Oh, I'm so good at guessing! A new boy-toy who loves violet? Oh, he'll want to hold your hands even more!"
[The nail painting is careful but efficient. Soon, Winter's nails on both hands are coated in the matte raven-black lacquer that has a subtle purple glow under the lamp.]
Amelia, please. We’re just chatting. What’s the harm?
[ Let them be happy for you, girl!
It feels like they’ve barely gotten started when it’s suddenly all done, and Winter lifts his hands to look them over, tilting this way and that to let the polish catch the light. ]
They’re lovely. Thank you so much. And thank you, Amelia, for bringing me here.
[She may or may not have grumbled while her nails were painted. She's done just a minute after Winter's and Amelia looks at her purple nails with an expression that can only be described as: 😐]
This will suffice. I'm choosing next time. And you're welcome, Winter.
[The witch studies his hands; while her shade shimmers and color shifts, Winter's looks like smooth obsidian stones with a touch of violet.]
Hm. I think your whole look is complete now.
[The nail tech waves them off, thanking them for their patronage. Amelia will keep looking at her hands wondering what a certain wizard will think.]
Would you like a whole bottle of that color? Though painting it yourself will take practice.
Mm. I look forward to seeing how your nails will look in the future.
[Though her face doesn't show it, Amelia feels glad that Winter has enjoyed himself and has found something new to have fun with. If she had closed herself off during this vacation, a moment like this would have never happened and they would have both missed out.
... It's nice to have a friend.]
Let's not rush lunch. What would you like to peruse before we eat?
[She'll take a basket too, it's time to be shopping buddies. And as much as she was a grump about Winter being a very mild tease about her new relationship, part of Amelia is a little grateful that he's willing to listen to her about it, or at least the mundane parts.]
I actually might make him something. He gifted me a book for Christmas; Fables and Legends of Faerûn.
[And even before that, he went above and beyond with their dinner date so she really wants to consider her return gift carefully.]
I don't know how much you've talked to him, but he's extremely generous even to someone like me. I'm afraid whatever I'm able to give, might be small in comparison.
[ Oh, girl. He stops walking, which might cause a problem as they're shuffling down the aisle between displays, and whips around, one finger raised almost accusingly. ]
First of all, "even to someone like me"? Don't you dare let me hear you saying that about yourself again. You're his girlfriend. By all accounts, you should be the person at the top of his list.
Second of all— [ He raises another finger. ] —you're his girlfriend. He'll cherish any gift from you, big or small or all else between. If you want to make him something, that only makes it all the more special.
[Winter's reaction is unexpected and it makes Amelia stop when he does. His words do affect her because she had instinctively put herself down without really meaning to. Without Berna to confide in, she doesn't have the much-needed outer voice to call her out on her negativity.]
... Thank you, Winter. I... [She runs a hand through her hair and sighs.]
It's been a while since I've been in a relationship. I think I needed that from you since I get stuck in my head too often.
Don't mention it. And I'd be happy to remind you again, if you ever need it.
[ He has self-confidence in spades. He can certainly spare some for his friends. ]
All that aside, I don't know too much about Gale personally, so I can't be too much help. Wizards must record their spells in a tome, or learn them from scrolls. A satchel or bookbag of some kind might be appreciated.
Or... I have another idea, if you're feeling adventurous.

[ He smiles, placing a hand on her shoulder to give it a small squeeze. ]
I think the two of you will be good for each other.

As with any relationship.
[ Gentle reminder!! But anyway, moving on, he strikes a little pose for her, expression teasing. ]
Is such a thing possible, I wonder?

Well, if there's anything I've learned as a witch, it's that the impossible can be made possible.

"Oh, and Miss Amelia? I've chosen a color for you already! I'll just work on your hands at the same time."
[And she holds up a very fetching shimmery violet polish.]
... I don't get to choose?
[The tech cackles as she paints on the base coat for Winter and gestures with one of her many hands for Amelia to present her nails.]
"There is a spark in your eye, a light gait of being known. You can't change my mind. Besides, it looks magical, no?"
